3 Easy Steps To Redesign Your Life

Are you living the life you want or are you living the life you have been given?

Most people take the easy path and the one with the least amount of resistance.

Repeated behavior creates habits; and habits are hard to change, especially bad ones.  Your life is made up of many habits you do over time.  Unless you have all great habits that you practice daily, you may have woken up one day and wondered, “Where am I and how did I get here?”

Just like changing course while sailing needs you to move the rudder or change the way the sails are set, so changing where you are at in life needs you to take action.  It was repeated action that got you to where you are at and it will be repeated different actions that will get you to where you want to be.

If you will follow these three steps daily, they will be a road map for you and will help you to not be too distracted or make wrong decisions.  They will help bring you to your destination.

1)     Ask Yourself Daily, “What Do I Want?”

How often have you asked yourself this question?  How much thought have you put into the answer?

If you don’t know what you want, where you want to live or what you want to be doing, you need to answer these questions before you set sail.  If you don’t know, you will just get blown around on the sea of life.  These answers will be your rudder.  They will determine how you adjust your sails each week.

When demands come, you will know what is worth your time to accept and you will know what you need to say no to.

If an opportunity comes your way, you will see it and realize you need to seize it, or pass it by.  You won’t miss the opportunity and you won’t waste your time pursuing something that won’t bring you closer to where you want to be.

Every time something comes your way, ask yourself, “Is this really what I want?”

Asking this question will give you direction and clarity.

2)     Ask Yourself Daily, “Who Can I Serve?”

As Zig Zigler said, “Help enough people get what they want, and you will get everything that you want.”

Genuinely seek out how you can serve people.  If you see a need, act upon it and fill it.  If you don’t know a need, ask.  Ask how you can help.  Ask them about their hurts and burdens.  Find a need and then help meet it.  Find out people's goals and help them get closer to reaching those goals.

If you practice this daily you will be on a fast track not only to success, but to an enriched and meaningful life.

When you serve people, you add value.  Any store or service that does not add value, closes down.  They don’t last long if they are not giving value to their customers.  If they bring value to people, they grow.

In order to redesign your life, apply this life principle and ask this question daily.  “Who can I serve?”

3)     Ask Yourself Daily, “Why Not Now?”

This question is essential if you desire to redesign your life.  You must ask it every single day.  Unfortunately, it is human nature to ask, “Why not tomorrow?”  This question leads to procrastination, which halts your progress, eventually frustrates you since you are not moving closer to meeting your desired goals, and in the end, causes you to throw in the towel.  It is like getting stranded on a sand bar.

You can come up with many excuses why you can’t or don’t have the time to serve people or take the action that will adjust your sails so that you can catch the wind to keep you moving in the direction that you want to go.  You must choose to act, not make excuses or procrastinate.  If you do not act on a thought within five seconds, in most cases, you won't act.  You will talk yourself out of doing what you thought to do.

Next time you ask yourself this question, and hopefully it will be tomorrow, write down every excuse you came up with as to why you can’t or shouldn’t take action now.  After that, put the paper away until the next day.  When you get up, read your paper.  It will definitely put everything into clearer perspective.

As you start to redesign your life, at first your actions may be small. Maybe you’ll just make a phone call or send an email to a hurting friend.  Maybe you will do a small chore that you normally don’t do.  Maybe you will pay for someone’s coffee. Or maybe you’ll read an inspirational or challenging book that will give you more motivation. But if you will commit to asking these questions over time, you will be constantly tweaking your course and catching the wind.  If you desire to redesign your life, following these three steps daily is the simplest way to add value to others and to your own life.

As they say, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step.”  Get stepping and create the life you desire.
